The Frost/Davis Family—Memories and Recipes from The Low Country and Beyond is one story, like many, of an African American family that lived through slavery, segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement and into the 21st century. Memories and recipes that are shared with you reveal a strong sense of family love and are the foundation of a powerful familial legacy that had a profound impact in my life, including parents, grandparents, aunts, my uncle, siblings, many cousins, and many wonderful friends—many of whom have become family. I now understand many of their struggles and challenges—like many folks, but it helped me understand numerous things I remember from my youth.
 
Visits to the family were a wonderful part of my life. Mom was the “Boss,” and she learned how to cook from my maternal grandmother, Estelle “Nunka” and my paternal grandmother, Anna. This book was created to share some of the history from those who came before me and with those who will come after me. Always remember that the first and last ingredient in every recipe is LOVE.
